Que Es Esto??!!!

Hola amigas y amigos!

Just came across this video and I am curious as to what you all think. Didn't quite know what to make of it at first, I was fairly stunned. One of the good tango dancers once said that there are no styles in tango and that the only style that exists is tango. Yes, it's all about feeling and having fun, and one shouldn't be judgemental, but this has got to be something else!

Saludos, Malena

This video makes me smile. The dancers have skills, dance to the music, and seem to be enjoying themselves while entertaining others. Theirs is not the style I'd like to immitate, but watching them interpreting the music gives me some new ideas to try in my dance. Thanks for posting.

It makes me said to think that some of the people in the audience might've thought this is argentine tango. Had I seen this before my exposure to tango, I would've ran screaming.

They are Carlos and Diana, the tango escenario world champions of 2006. Both are Colombians, but you probably know all this. I don't know who say that doesn't exist tango styles, but sure I will ask him/her what canyengue, villa urquiza or milonguero are.
Of course there is styles in tango! To believe that the Arquimbau's, Javier Rodriguez and Andrea Missé or Pablo and Dana dance the same thing (like "just tango") is not very wise. There are different techniques, different ways of feel the music, etc, etc.
In this case, this couple is mixing tango canyengue with some things of "tango nuevo" and stage style. They are not very clean, and don't have great technique, but they have a lot of "sabor" (of course they have, they are from Colombia), so they are very fun and nice to watch.

well... They ARE musical. And when they're in control, they do seem to be having some Tango fun, with a little Lindy Hop and some Jane Fonda thrown in...

What is stunning about it?
I just see a performance tango, and not even the most controversial/ repulsive/over-the-top one... Personally, I don't like it, but I don't see anything special about it (either good or bad). Something escapes me, perhaps.

sThe person who said there are no styles in tango is Ezequiel Paludi. I am not very familiar with his dancing or philosophy (although we will be taking a lesson with Geraldine and him in a couple of weeks!), but I don't think this is meant to be taken literally, he was making the point that nowadays people are quick to judge any style different from their own and that tango should be enjoyed for what it gives us.
Thank you all for commenting!

Malena,

I was called close minded once. I despised anything lack of elegance and connection.

I, however, found this performance interesting. It is different. It is entertaining. They sure do have skills. I don't think that anyone dances like this in the milongas in BsAs. As a performance, what the heck, have a blast and some good laughs.

PS. I am trying to book some privates with G&E too while I am down in BsAs.

Happy Dancing!

i personally love watching performance tango. there is a tango for every occasion, and in this case, i enjoyed the show very much.

i agree with tanguillo that they are not very clean, but their exuberance is contagious!

thanks for posting this.

Oh my God. I hated this exhibition and it is not tango. Their technique is sloppy. Of course, that's just my personal opinion.

I did enjoy this video, even though at first I was a bit confused as to what I was looking at. The clip on Nuit's blog was not enjoyable to watch, in her post of the same vein.

This couple gives you the impression that they have a lot of energy and are enjoying themselves.
